17 Hero Labs Games, 0 Games With a New Hero

This isn't really a bug report (maybe?) but I don't know where else I would put this. It took 18 Hero Labs games for me to get a game with one of the new heros. I imagine this was due to a combination of me getting extremely unlucky, but also the game probably not keeping track of "non-new hero games" played after the mode was shut down for the day, everyday. If that is the case, and this isn't a bug, please FOR THE LOVE OF GOD change it, I am actually begging you, it was maddening.
(I thought I was either going crazy or Yoshi just straight up lied in the patch notes)

Please - Sisyphus

Happened to me too, started putting in Seven and Haze as my two normal hero picks and started getting new heroes.

25 Hero Labs games, 1 game with a new hero, this system is actual fucking garbage.
I appreciate the devs making this game, but this is unbelievable.

Worth remembering that you'll be fighting these characters way way more than you'll be playing them once they're officially released too. Might as well get the practice in

I'm not sure if that's uplifting or even more demoralizing, either way, 29 games - 1 new hero game

I'm assuming that stacks are rigging their picks so that people in a 3-stack can at minimum get 1 person a new hero, if not more of them. There's 12 players in a game, let's assume that each game has two 3-stacks in it, the people in those stacks would pick Haze / Seven + all 6 new heroes. That'll net one player from each of those 3-stacks one of the new heroes, leaving 4 remaining, but it's not 4 remaining for the other 6 players, it's 4 remaining for the other 6 players + the 4 other players in those two stacks that didn't get a new hero either. They'll essentially get to roll multiple times to get a test hero in their stack, and since they'll have the two most picked normal roster heroes then there is even less competition for them because normal players outside of those stacks might also have them selected, sometimes unwittingly. A stack size of 4 can also guarantee two test heroes and award 4, a stack of 5 can guarantee 3 but can also give 5 (on a single team as well, mind you).

What they should do is force players to pick an amount of normal roster heroes that matches their stack queue size. If 3 players queue together they should be forced to pick three normal heroes. Solo queuers should be prioritized in a way and only have to pick 1 normal hero, rather than 2. Another alternative would be to specifically limit the amount of test heroes that a single stack can get, so instead of 1-3 for a 3-stack, 2-4 for a 4-stack or 3-5 for a 5-stack you'd make it so a 3-stack can only get 1 and a 4-stack can only get 2 or something.

Btw, I say this as someone who almost exclusively plays in 2-stacks or 3-stacks, but we haven't been bothered enough to try and rig the hero selection by only having Haze and Seven highlighted between all of us (we just use our normal heroes, which are all different, so it seems like it'll probably never result in getting a test hero if people are abusing the system on the other side), we've only played a few hero labs matches (certainly not 30 like OP) but none of us have gotten a test hero yet.

Have you set the experimental heroes to a higher priority than the others? I have Magician set to High Priority and a couple others lab heroes set to just Priority, and then two normal heroes selected without any priority. I've played 7 games in hero labs (all solo, which could also be the issue) and only had a non-lab hero once. I'd imagine that setting every new hero to High Priority might increase your odds, but if that's what you're already doing, maybe try what I've done and just have one hero set to High.

This is my current queue roster:

I have tried only having one new hero on purple, I have tried having many more on highest priority as well, nothing works. It seems the main issue (maybe) is that for some reason solo queuing since pretty much everyone that plays in a team ends up getting the new heros even if they don't have any of the same heros selected. Also, it doesn't make any sense on paper for it to be better to only have one new hero on purple as that'll give you less options for games where you can play said new heros. I think the character selection system is just screwed.

I think I see your problem. Get rid of the priority on Seven. Keep both Haze and Seven at normal, "selected" tier.

I'll try it out, but why do you think that will work exactly?
I'm not entirely sure, but I think the game tries to create matches with the highest average priority of each hero selected.

For an example situation, let's say 6 people queue into a match with these rosters:
  1. Haze**, Seven, Viscous
  2. Haze, Seven**, Viscous
  3. Haze, Seven, Viscous**
  4. Haze**, Abrams*, Dynamo
  5. Haze**, Abrams, Dynamo
  6. Haze**, Abrams, Dynamo, Ivy
Based on my experiences, the team would look like this:
  1. Haze
  2. Seven
  3. Viscous
  4. Abrams
  5. Dynamo
  6. Ivy
So you could imagine if someone were to have the exact same roster as you but remove the priority on Seven, you would be more likely to get Seven than them.

Well it certainly worked, played 2 games, got 2 new hero games. I am free from my curse, thank you.

If you want to maximize your chances then it's worth noting that Infernus also seems to have higher pickrate than Seven right now. So Infernus + Haze on white priority might net you better results than Seven + Haze.

If this site is to be believed at least: https://tracklock.gg/heroes
Sort by Pick Rate. Haze is 1st on 88.54% and Infernus is 2nd on 76.92%. Seven is all the way down at 12th on 55.35%.

Try Infernus + Haze on white, every hero labs hero on Gold except for one that you think you may prefer to try first on Purple.
