Following up on this one - the issue ended up being my CPU. Apparently I had a CPU from a faulty batch of Intel i5 CPUs which had known defects. I sent it in to replace, and now it is resolved. Somehow this was the first symptom of a problem which would eventually progress to the PC not working...
