Have you installed steam-devices (https://github.com/ValveSoftware/steam-devices)? It should be packaged for most major distros.
An alternative is to try the steam flatpak, which comes with it preinstalled.
I also connect to the laptop through USB (not bluetooth), in case that makes a difference.
I got it working, the only option under gyro that seems to work is choosing mode to be "As Mouse".
Without any sort of aim assist though I was finding it way too challenging even with the gyro to be competitive, so might have to give up on the game until it has better controller support.
