I am not sure why since this has not happened before but I was able to fix the problem by running the game as admin as described in this other post: https://forums.playdeadlock.com/threads/you-are-not-currently-signed-in-to-steam-or-the-deadlock-bug.107691/

Game crashed for nearly everyone (if not everyone? not sure, but someone was able to pause for those who crashed). Suspected it had to do with Lash's ultimate. Lash also ulted and crashed later in the game but that time he was the only one that crashed...
