You're right that the suicide option in the escape menu is broken, however the console "killme" command does work still as far as I know, that being said your suggested options to remedy being stuck on the starter island are better alternatives than having to kill yourself to get back into lane.

There's lots of people this is happening to and no responses from the dev team when they're reached out to.
