If you hold melee during the initial startup of the Magic Carpet, you will be able to keep using heavy melee while flying. It seems like you are also able to chain light melee attacks on the carpet as well, but it's inconsistent.

Kinda silly Valve didn't add Shift+Ctrl for Up/Down movement to the Magic Carpet, not having that is kinda brutal for the item.
